City considering proof of concept for contactless drive-in events
We have noted the recent media statement by Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa in relation to mass participation events.
We understand that the national department is also considering safety plans for drive-in events with 1000 participants.
It is in this regard that we have written to the national department requesting that the City of Cape Town be allowed to host a drive-in event to showcase the proof of concept for such future events.
Cape Town has consistently been voted one of the world’s leading event destinations and has proven its mettle in hosting major events over the years.
We believe we are equipped and have established platforms to test and to evaluate the feasibility of hosting such a proof of concept drive-in event in the Mother City.
This would be supported by the City.
The City is considering this step because we know and value the importance of the events industry, which is vital to our economic growth and job creation.
Without an operational events industry, many artists, production companies, venues and many other workers in the value chain remain in crisis and jobless.
Allowing for the gradual and managed reopening of the events industry as an urgent intervention, will assist the industry to commence recovery and to alleviate the economic distress.
The City, through its Events Coordination Committee (ECC), has drawn up a standard operating document to be used as a guide for event organisers as part of the permit application process. These are in line with the Disaster Management Act and National Health directives.
There is a major focus on a contactless environment, strict health and safety protocols for all events to ensure the safety of participants, staff, service providers and patrons as a top priority.
The City has already implemented Standard Operating Procedures which have allowed the film industry to operate in a safe environment over the last four months and we believe our event protocols will achieve the same.
